However, emulsion polymers at low VOC often lack the capability of balancing hardness, adhesion, and anti-corrosive performance, thus limiting their use in direct-to-metal (DTM) applications. For optimal performance in these demanding applications, it is critical to understand relationships between the resin composition and the coating formulation.<\/p>\n<p>In order to adhere to the strict performance specifications of a diverse landscape of end users, coatings manufacturers typically implement a multicoat primer\/topcoat system. These systems require separate applications and thus increase the return to service time.<\/p>\n<p>Factors that influence successful DTM formulations will be discussed, including pigment volume concentration, extender chemistry, extender particle size, and polymer compositional variables. How these factors affect water uptake, film hardness, adhesion, and salt fog resistance will be examined.
