A new report from UL Environment, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/environment.ul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Sustainable Edge\u2122<\/a>,&#8221; shows\u00a0that companies pursuing\u00a0a sustainability strategy\u00a0experience lower costs, increased innovation, improved brand loyalty, increased growth and lower risk.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 90% of purchasing entities consider a company\u2019s social and environmental commitment and track record before making a purchasing decision. This trend to develop and manufacture sustainable products will continue to gain momentum, as it impacts our lives in innumerable ways.<\/p>\n<p>For coatings\u00a0formulators, a sustainability strategy incorporates a dedication to develop and produce environmentally responsible products from a health, environmental and safety standpoint. This approach encompasses the selection of acceptable materials when and where they are available, to develop and produce coatings that meet performance goals.<\/p>\n<p>Acceptable materials for coatings formulations might include\u00a0bio-based materials and materials that produce little or no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=low+VOC&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">VOCs<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Coatings\/search?k=low+VOC&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), are RoHS compliant, are free of formaldehyde (EU), phthalates (EU) and bisphenol A (EU), and are recyclable. Formulators may also pursue the use of recycled raw materials where possible. A few of the many initiatives which drive the market to formulate and produce sustainable products include Green Building, LEED, Green Star and Green Construction Code.<\/p>\n<p>UL Environment, a division of Underwriters Laboratories (UL), has taken a proactive approach to identify, test and certify materials that meet a variety of sustainability criteria . UL Environment offers a number of certification, validation and testing services, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ul.com\/ecologo\" target=\"_blank\">ECOLOGO<\/a> to certify products for a range of environmental attributes, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ul.com\/greenguard\" target=\"_blank\">GREENGUARD<\/a>, to certify products for low chemical emissions, as well as services to validate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and a range of product claims. Previously, Ron was the Vice President of Industrial Research and Technology, as well as the Global Director of Coil Coating Technology for BASF (Morton International). During his fourteen-year tenure with the company, he developed innovative coil coating commercial products primarily for roofing, residential, commercial and industrial building, as well as industrial and automotive applications. He was awarded fifteen patents for new resin and coating formulas. From 1974 to 1990, Ron held positions with Desoto, Inc. and PPG Industries. He was the winner of two R&amp;D awards for coatings utilizing PVDF resins, developed the first commercial high solids automotive topcoat and was awarded 39 U.S. patents for a variety of novel technologies he developed. He holds a Masters in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently studied Polymer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Since 2004, he has provided consulting, product development, contract research, feasibility studies, failure mode analysis and more for a wide range of clients, as well as their suppliers, customers and coaters. He has also served as an Adjunct Research Professor at the Coatings Research Institute of Eastern Michigan University. As such, Ron was awarded a sub-grant from the Department of Energy to develop energy-saving coating technology for architectural applications, as well as grants from private industry to develop low energy cure, low VOC compliant coatings. He taught courses on color and application of automotive top coats, cathodic electro-coat and surface treatment. His experience includes coatings for automotive, coil, architectural, industrial and product finishing. Previously, Ron was the Vice President of Industrial Research and Technology, as well as the Global Director of Coil Coating Technology for BASF (Morton International). During his fourteen-year tenure with the company, he developed innovative coil coating commercial products primarily for roofing, residential, commercial and industrial building, as well as industrial and automotive applications. He was awarded fifteen patents for new resin and coating formulas. From 1974 to 1990, Ron held positions with Desoto, Inc. and PPG Industries. He was the winner of two R&amp;D awards for coatings utilizing PVDF resins, developed the first commercial high solids automotive topcoat and was awarded 39 U.S. patents for a variety of novel technologies he developed. He holds a Masters in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently studied Polymer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
