Examples include combining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=swellable%20polymer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swellable polymers<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=soluble%20polymer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soluble polymers<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Clay&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clays<\/a> with swellable or soluble polymers.<\/li>\n<li>Oil-in-water emulsions thickened using swellable polymers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Carbomer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbomers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Acrylates%20Copolymer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acrylate copolymers<\/a> can sometimes be difficult to pick up and spread on skin due to their salt sensitivity. Adding .1-.2% xanthan gum can significantly improve pickup and product spreadability.<\/li>\n<li>Adding swellable- and soluble-polymers to the oil phase of oil-in-water emulsions prior to emulsification can frequently improve the quality of the emulsion. The technique works well for neutralized swellable-polymer powders or dispersions and soluble-polymers like xanthan gum.<\/li>\n<li>Use surface-treated easy-to-disperse grades of powdered carbomers and acrylate copolymers for easier incorporation into water.<\/li>\n<li>The best thickener to formulate high alcohol (60-90%) sanitizer formulations is acrylates\/C10-30 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Acrylates%2FC10-30%20Alkyl%20Acrylate%20Crosspolymer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alkyl acrylate crosspolymer<\/a> neutralized using triisopropanolamine or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=tetrahydroxypropyl%20ethylenediamine&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tetrahydroxypropyl ethylenediamine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The most efficient salt-stable all-natural-based thickening system is a mixture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=konjac%20glucomannan&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">konjac glucomannan<\/a> (amorphophallus konjac root extract) and xanthan gum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Oil-in-water emulsions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When formulating thin, stable, sprayable oil-in-water emulsions, use thickener combinations that have a high yield value or resting viscosity. Examples include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Magnesium%20Aluminum%20Silicate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnesium aluminum silicate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Sodium%20Magnesium%20Fluorosilicate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sodium magnesium fluorosilicate<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=microcrystalline%20cellulose&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microcrystalline cellulose<\/a> combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?casName=Xanthan%20gum&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xanthan gum<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=carboxymethyl%20cellulose&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carboxymethyl cellulose<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Always add salts after emulsification to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=lamellar%20gel&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lamellar gel<\/a> network-based formulations for maximum viscosity and stability. Ideally below the phase transition temperature (&lt;45C).<\/li>\n<li>Adding low levels of soluble- or swellable-polymers to lamellar gel network-based formulations can reduce the graininess commonly seen in freeze\/thaw stability samples.<\/li>\n<li>Using a 60% or 90% mono <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?casName=Glyceryl%20stearates&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glyceryl stearate<\/a> in oil-in-water emulsions will normally give you a better emulsion and skin feel than using a conventional 35-40% mono glyceryl stearate.<\/li>\n<li>A natural based oil-in-water lamellar gel network-based emulsion with good long-term stability is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Stearyl%20Alcohol&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stearyl alcohol<\/a> 2%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Glyceryl%20Stearate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glyceryl stearate<\/a> (60% mono) 2%, and triglyceryl stearate 1%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Water-in-oil emulsions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Zinc%20Sulfate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zinc sulfate<\/a> can help stabilize water-in-oil emulsions and significantly reduce the preservative level in the formulation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Chelating%20Agents%20%2F%20Sequestrants&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chelating agents<\/a> should not be used in this application. Currently, most water-in-oil emulsions use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Sodium%20Chloride&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sodium chloride<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Magnesium%20Sulfate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnesium sulfate<\/a> as stabilizers.<\/li>\n<li>Adding low levels of soluble- or water-swellable-polymers to the water phase of water-in-oil emulsions can significantly improve their freeze\/thaw stability.<\/li>\n<li>Over shearing water-in-oil emulsions can cause a viscosity decrease over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Solubilizing oils into water<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When solubilizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Fragrance%20Ingredients&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fragrances<\/a> into water start by using 5 parts of active solubilizer for every part of fragrance. If successful, reduce the solubilizer to the point of failure. This will establish the working range of the solubilizer.<\/li>\n<li>Polar oils, like fragrances, are significantly easier to solubilize than most cosmetic emollients. It can take as much as 15-20 parts of solubilizer for each part oil compared to 3-5 parts for most fragrances.<\/li>\n<li>Good natural based solubilizers include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Polyglyceryl-10%20Oleate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polyglyceryl 10 oleate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Sorbitan%20Oleate%20Decylglucoside%20Crosspolymer&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sorbitan oleate decylglucoside crosspolymer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Emollients<\/h3>\n<p>Use emollients in formulations that have good skin feel and clinically proven skin effects. Examples of natural emollients include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Squalane&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">squalane<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=jojoba%20oil&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2021pcc&amp;utm_term=tips_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jojoba oil<\/a>.
