The association, stemming of course, from the fact that the most common constituent of sand is silica, which is usually in the form of quartz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Silica&amp;sug=31&amp;st=1&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silica<\/a>, chemical formula SiO<sub>2<\/sub> or silicon dioxide, can exist in crystalline or amorphous forms and can be natural or manufactured.<sup>1<\/sup> Almost all of the silica used in contemporary cosmetic formulations are of the synthetic variety, and their properties are dependent on the method of manufacture. For example, Pyrogenic silicas, which can be identified by various INCI names &#8211; Silica, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=fumed+silica&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fumed Silica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Silica+Dimethyl+Silylate&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silica dimethyl silylate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Silica+Silylate&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silica silylate<\/a> &#8211; are produced by a combustion process that results in spherical particles of nanometric size<sub>.<\/sub><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Silica is a multifunctional ingredient that has found extensive use in cosmetic formulations. It is used, for example, as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opacifying, bulking, suspending and anti-caking agents<\/li>\n<li>Absorbents<\/li>\n<li>Abrasives\/exfoliants<\/li>\n<li>Flow agents for powders<\/li>\n<li>Gellant for anhydrous oils and systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Loose and pressed powders, toothpastes, lipsticks and sunscreens are but a few of the product forms that benefit from inclusion of silica in their formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Simply defined, a silicate is a salt derived from silica (SiO<sub>2<\/sub>).<sup>1<\/sup> Silicates can be derived from naturally occurring minerals, but they can also be produced synthetically. There are many families of silicates, but only a select few are routinely selected for use in personal care products. The determination to use one or another silicate type is based on its specific properties and how they might benefit a given formulation. Generally, silicates are known to be effective absorbents, anti-caking and opacifying agents, viscosity and slip modifiers. Within these broad categories, the formulator can further narrow their selections based on the intended end-use. For example, particle size and distribution are specifications that would be important considerations for some applications. Some commonly used silicates in personal care are:<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Talc&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Talc<\/a>:<\/h3>\n<p>A natural clay mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate. It has excellent absorbent properties, is used in a wide range of products and is the key ingredient in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Formulation\/search?k=Powders&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\">loose<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Formulation\/search?k=Pressed+Powders&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\">pressed powders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=Magnesium+Aluminum+Silicate&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=KnowledgeCenter&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=2022pcc&amp;utm_term=Silica&amp;utm_content=Taylor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnesium Aluminum Silicate<\/a>:<\/h3>\n<p>Derived from silicate ores of smectite clay. She had the privilege of working with global teams to develop and launch products both domestically and worldwide for many popular brands, including Dove and Suave. Concurrent to her work at Prospector, Priscilla is a Product Development Chemist with Bria Research Labs. She is actively involved in formulating for a diverse array of clients. While she mostly formulates personal care and cosmetics products, she has also had the opportunity to work on projects for the household, industrial and institutional cleaners industry. Priscilla was born and raised in Trinidad, West Indies, but she considers Chicago her adopted hometown.
