The survey results are noteworthy, as 70% of Americans say they\u2019re searching for greener products, and 67% of business decision makers indicate sustainability is an important factor when making decisions for their organizations.<\/p>\n<h4>Avoiding Misleading Claims<\/h4>\n<p>However, many manufacturers misrepresent their products by claiming they are green for the purposes of enhancing sales. In 2012, the Federal Trade Commission revised its Green Guides, the agency\u2019s core set of guidelines to help marketers avoid making misleading environmental claims. The Guides are now more specific and prescriptive, making it easier for the FTC to prosecute \u201cgreenwashers.\u201d Accordingly, if a green claim is considered to be deceptive in the eyes of the FTC, there is both a financial and a legal risk.<\/p>\n<p>To minimize risk, compliance with FTC regulations is a minimum requirement. Based on their findings, the authors offer guidelines for general understanding of product claims within three categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Legitimate claims<\/strong>. These first-party claims use clear, specific language that can be substantiated. In other words, these claims meet the FTC eye test for credibility, but the information is not certified by an independent third party.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Certified claims<\/strong>. These claims have been substantiated by an independent third party. In recent years, several certifiers have begun to offer eco-labels under different classifications, such as validations, verifications, and certifications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Problematic claims<\/strong>. These first-party claims do not appear to meet the standards set by the FTC in the revised Green Guides. They\u2019re the \u201cgreenwashers\u201d in the study.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>The Case for Certified Claims<\/h4>\n<p>Survey results indicate that 54% of consumers and businesses prefer certified claims over legitimate or problematic claims.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>56% of those surveyed indicated that certifications made products more reputable.<\/li>\n<li>58% of respondents also said that they would pay up to 10% more for a third party certified green product.<\/li>\n<li>89% of businesses are willing to pay more for a product certified by a third party, compared to 58% of consumers.<\/li>\n<li>Survey results indicate that confusion or unclear claims equate to negative brand perception.<\/li>\n<li>Certifications had the most positive influence on product purchase, with 93% of consumers choosing a certification as one of their top three factors for choosing a product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And business decision makers are more sophisticated than consumers about green claims and value the role certifications play in purchase decisions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certifications save time so that they don\u2019t have to research product claims.<\/li>\n<li>Certifications help make the case for a product\u2019s long-term cost-effectiveness when the initial cost is higher.<\/li>\n<li>Certifications reduce risk and insulate the decision maker from backlash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Want to learn more?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you missed the Under the Lens: Claiming Green webinar, you can still get all the details by accessing the recording. He was awarded fifteen patents for new resin and coating formulas. From 1974 to 1990, Ron held positions with Desoto, Inc. and PPG Industries. He was the winner of two R&amp;D awards for coatings utilizing PVDF resins, developed the first commercial high solids automotive topcoat and was awarded 39 U.S. patents for a variety of novel technologies he developed. He holds a Masters in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently studied Polymer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. As such, Ron was awarded a sub-grant from the Department of Energy to develop energy-saving coating technology for architectural applications, as well as grants from private industry to develop low energy cure, low VOC compliant coatings. He taught courses on color and application of automotive top coats, cathodic electro-coat and surface treatment. His experience includes coatings for automotive, coil, architectural, industrial and product finishing. Previously, Ron was the Vice President of Industrial Research and Technology, as well as the Global Director of Coil Coating Technology for BASF (Morton International). During his fourteen-year tenure with the company, he developed innovative coil coating commercial products primarily for roofing, residential, commercial and industrial building, as well as industrial and automotive applications. He was awarded fifteen patents for new resin and coating formulas. From 1974 to 1990, Ron held positions with Desoto, Inc. and PPG Industries. He was the winner of two R&amp;D awards for coatings utilizing PVDF resins, developed the first commercial high solids automotive topcoat and was awarded 39 U.S. patents for a variety of novel technologies he developed. He holds a Masters in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently studied Polymer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
