Each year, over 42,000 tonnes of microplastics are released into the environment according to European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Microplastic are poorly biodegradable and remain in the environment for many decades, thus accumulating in aquatic life and eventually ending up in our food and drinking water. On average, a person ingests approximately 100 solid plastic particles per day.<\/p>\n

Microplastics are widely used in cosmetics to give sensorial, rheological and textural properties to a product. The recent proposal by ECHA to ban microplastics in leave-on cosmetics that are present at 0.01% or greater, poses a threat to cosmetic manufacturers who continue to use synthetic polymers such as carbomer as they cannot find a suitable alternative. Carbomer, if classified, will be the second most prevalent microplastic used in cosmetic formulations due to its versatility and ease of use.<\/p>\n

In this webinar, we propose a natural, sustainable and biodegradable alternative to microplastics: Valida.<\/p>\n

Valida is derived from cellulose, the most abundant organic polymer on Earth and the main component of all plants. Unlike conventional cellulose materials, Valida is not chemically treated. Instead, Valida is mechanically processed through fibrillation, creating a unique 3D network. As a result of this unique structure, Valida offers similar properties to microplastics such as excellent stabilisation of particles without affecting viscosity and supreme silky skin-feel with no tackiness, making it a suitable material for formulations from easily spreadable creams to sprayable face mists.<\/p>\n

Due to its pH tolerance (3-10), Valida can be used in many applications such as AHA toners, skin cleansers, sun and hair care. Its additive boosting effect can allow you to reduce the dosage of actives and even UV filters.<\/p>\n

In this webinar, we will discuss the different applications where Valida can be utilised and learn more about this new type of cellulose technology, taking a step towards sustainable development.<\/p>\n
