In a rapidly evolving market, consumers are constantly shifting their buying habits, and formulators rarely have enough time to keep up. I hope you&#8217;ll use this list of resources to streamline your work process and create highly effective products that click with consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Last week I covered six of twelve trends that I&#8217;ve identified as integral to successful product development in 2013. I&#8217;ll be happy to add it to the list.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. Natural or nature-identical actives. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another result of the green trend is the growing popularity of natural actives or nature-identical actives. Despite the recession, consumer demand for nature-based cosmetics has remained strong, especially in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Botanicals and extracts are increasingly popular components in products positioned as &#8220;natural.&#8221; Recent developments in plant stem cell technologies are making waves in the anti-aging market. No one will care that the product is green, if it doesn&#8217;t perform. Several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=%22natural+active%22?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural active ingredients<\/a> are available on Innovadex.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Cosmetic soothing aids. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Products touting anti-inflammatory benefits and reduction of skin discomfort are on the rise. Often these products take a natural, plant-based slant, as well. A variety of soothing active ingredients are available to formulators. These materials work by blocking the TRPV1 thermo receptor to reduce burning and stinging reactions and alleviate neurologically based skin irritation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Noraplex (Nopal cactus extract by Barnet Products) stabilizes membrane channels responsible for calcium transport, which then blocks the initiation of the inflammatory response.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3030\/210616\/SymSitive-1609?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SymSitive 1609<\/a> by Symrise (Pentylene Glycol and 4-t-Butylcyclohexanol) is a new active ingredient for treating sensitive skin. It has been shown to reduce capsaicin induced burning\/stinging, calm skin and increase skin&#8217;s tolerance to physical stimuli.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>9. Reduced use of polyethylene based micro-beads as exfoliants. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Concern about polyethylene micro-beads, or micro-plastic, in marine environments has been growing over the last several years. The micro-plastics can be ingested by aquatic life and can transfer chemicals into the environment. The beads are often found floating in sewage treatment plants and are difficult to eliminate.<\/p>\n<p>Although exfoliants are not the only the source of micro-plastic, there is a strong push to remove them from all personal care products. If you&#8217;re looking to replace micro-beads in your formulations, try one of these natural substitutes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/1740\/69114\/Almond-Stone-Granules?st=1&amp;sl=25548109&amp;crit=a2V5d29yZDpbZ3JvdW5kIGFsbW9uZF0%3d&amp;ss=2&amp;k=ground%7Calmond%7Calmonds&amp;t=ground+almond?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Almond Stone Granules<\/a> by Carribbean Natural Products, Inc.<\/li>\n<li>Corn Meal (Irradiated) by McKinley Resources Incorporated<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/802\/200408\/Actiscrub-Sweet-Almond-Shell?st=1&amp;sl=25548109&amp;crit=a2V5d29yZDpbZ3JvdW5kIGFsbW9uZF0%3d&amp;ss=2&amp;k=ground%7Calmond%7Calmonds&amp;t=ground+almond?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Actiscrub\u00ae Sweet Almond Shell<\/a> by Active Organics<\/li>\n<li>NatureBead waxes (Micro Powders)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>10. Emulsifier-free emulsions. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Amid growing concerns regarding the negative health impact of certain chemical emulsifiers, many formulators are taking action to remove them all together. Emulsifier-free emulsions are typically sterically stabilized emulsions using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=swellable+polymer?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swellable polymers<\/a> as thickeners. Carrageenan, pectin, and locust bean gum are common cosmetic thickeners.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>11. Improved polymeric emulsifiers to formulate water in oil emulsions containing up to 90% water. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Improvements have made polymeric emulsifiers much more stable so that they can be formulated to quickly break when rubbed on skin.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/1483\/193180\/ABIL-EM-180?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abil\u00ae EM 180<\/a> by Evonik<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/75\/109380\/Dehymuls-PGPH?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dehymuls \u00ae PGPH<\/a> by BASF<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/134\/97592\/Cithrol-DPHS?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cithrol \u2122 DPHS<\/a> by Croda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>12. Acryloyldimethyltaurate based polymers (AMPs) for thickening skin care products. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Acryloyldimethyltaurate?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMPs<\/a> typically have better shear and UV stability than Carbomers and can be used down to a PH of 3.5. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter &amp; Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
