In documents, such as technical data sheets, an additive is often characterized as <em>Wetting &amp; Dispersing Additive<\/em>. However, the two types of additives differ strongly with respect to the role they play in the process and with respect to the chemical composition and structure of the molecules the additives are composed of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Function<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A system developer, like a paint formulator, must have a clear view on what each component of a paint or ink should do. The job a raw material, like an additive, must do in a system is called its <strong>function<\/strong>. The function describes in a few words what the system developer would like the additive to do. The solid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/Product?st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raw materials<\/a> that are used in paints and inks, pigments and fillers, are often supplied as powders. The solid particles are glued together in clusters, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=agglomerate&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agglomerates<\/a>. Wetting will not occur when the surface tension is too high. The surface tension can be lowered by adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22wetting+agent%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>wetting agent<\/strong><\/a>. The hydrophobic part points towards the air and the hydrophilic part sticks into the liquid. An interface between a liquid and air is often referred to as a \u2018surface\u2019. Wetting agents are therefore often called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/Product\/search?k=Surfactants&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>surfactants<\/strong><\/a>, \u2018agents\u2019 that are active at a surface<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>There is a wide variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22wetting+agent%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wetting agents<\/a> that are used in paints and inks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dispersants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Solid particles attract each other. Energy is therefore needed to separate the particles from each other in the second step of the dispersion process. Particles in a liquid will move to each other and glue together because of the attractive forces. The spontaneous and undesired gluing together of solid particles in a liquid is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22flocculation%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>flocculation<\/strong><\/a>. Solid particles that have been separated from each other are stabilized against flocculation by using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22dispersant%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dispersant<\/strong><\/a><sup>3,4<\/sup>. These additives do their job because the molecules are designed to adsorb at the solid-liquid interface and assure repulsion between the particles. Particles repel each other when they all carry a charge of the same sign. This so-called <strong>electrostatic <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22stabilization%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>stabilization<\/strong><\/a> is obtained when the dispersant molecules carry a charge. <strong>Steric stabilization<\/strong> is obtained when all particles are covered with tails of sufficient length that dissolve in the liquid that surrounds the particles. The soluble tails are part of the dispersant molecules.<\/p>\n<p>Many companies develop and supply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=%22dispersant%22&amp;st=31&amp;utm_source=Knowledge+Center&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=Wetting_Agents_and_Dispersants&amp;utm_term=2024pc&amp;utm_content=Beetsma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispersants<\/a> for water-based, solvent-based and solvent-free systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wetting agents and dispersants are additives that are used in dispersion processes. The behavior of wetting agents and dispersants is governed by their chemical composition and molecular structure.
