This fall, EPA is expected to finalize the manufacturer-requested risk evaluations (MRREs) for DIDP and DINP prepared under TSCA. These high-molecular weight phthalates are used in key products and sectors \u2013 automotive manufacturing, building and construction, electrical cables, wall coverings, and more \u2013 that make modern life possible.<\/p>\n

EPA initiated a risk evaluation for DIDP on January 2, 2020, after it received a request from ExxonMobil Chemical Company through ACC\u2019s High Phthalates Panel. EPA initiated a risk evaluation for DINP on January 2, 2020, after it received a request from Evonik Corporation, ExxonMobil Chemical Company, and Teknor Apex through ACC\u2019s High Phthalates Panel.<\/p>\n

Manufacturers have full confidence based on years of scientific studies and multiple government reviews around the world that DIDP and DINP do not pose a risk to human health, and this is why through ACC\u2019s High Phthalates Panel they requested risk evaluations. This assessment of safety is important to businesses and consumers of these important products. The right of manufacturers to request risk evaluations for substances they manufacture was fundamental to the bipartisan effort to amend TSCA through the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. These MRREs are the first submitted to EPA under the Lautenberg Act.<\/p>\n

These MRREs should enable transparent, fair, and evidence-based risk evaluations of DINP and DIDP, which are among the preferred plasticizers in use today because of their strong safety profile, performance, cost-effectiveness and durability. The MRREs for DINP and DIDP are critical for informing manufacturer reliance on and consumer confidence in these phthalates.<\/p>\n

The results of the risk evaluations can also have significant implications for downstream users. This webinar, hosted by a panel of technical experts from ACC\u2019s High Phthalates Panel, will provide a high-level summary of the risk evaluations, next steps, and how it could impact your industry.<\/p>\n
