They are defined as materials that can absorb or retain moisture. Humectants can provide numerous benefits such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/3123\/Skin-Conditioning-Agents\/search?k=humectants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">moisturization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/5692\/Exfoliants---Peeling-Agents\/search?k=humectants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">exfoliation<\/a>, potentiation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/3326\/Preservatives\/search?k=humectants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">preservation<\/a> activity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/3509\/Solvents\/search?k=humectants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">solvency<\/a> to help dissolve actives, modification of skin feel, and helping to improve freeze\/thaw stability of oil in water emulsions.<\/p>\n<h4>Moisturizing Humectants<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=glycerin+humectant&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Glycerin<\/a> is the main humectant used in most high-performance moisturizers and is considered the gold standard to which all moisturizing humectants are compared. Many of the top-performing hand and body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=glycerin+lotion&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">lotions<\/a> contain between 10-20% glycerin and clinical data demonstrating moisturizing efficacy has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. The key issue with using efficacious levels of glycerin is tacky skin feel, and normally, other humectants are used in combination to improve the feel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Hydroxyethyl+Urea&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Hydroxyethyl Urea<\/a> (<span data-swap-id=\"truncated_desc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/581\/217051\/HYDROVANCE?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">HYDROVANCE\u00ae<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/581\/AkzoNobel-Personal-Care?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Akzo Nobel Personal Care<\/a>) Gels containing 5% Hydrovance have been shown to have similar moisturizing properties to glycerin with a significantly better skin feel than glycerin or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Sodium+PCA&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Sodium PCA<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Betaine&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Betaine<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/15887\/377838\/GENENCARE-OSMS-BA?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">GENENCARE\u2122 OSMS BA<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/15887\/DuPont-Industrial-Biosciences\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">DuPont<\/a>) is an excellent, non-tacky moisturizer that also has been shown have skin lightening activity and reduce surfactant-induced skin irritation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Sodium+PCA&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Sodium PCA<\/a> (<span data-swap-id=\"truncated_desc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=ajidew+nl+50&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">AJIDEW\u00ae NL-50<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/30\/Ajinomoto-North-America--Inc\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Ajinomoto<\/a>) is a natural humectant found in human skin as a component of NMF (natural moisturizing factor). Dry skin has been shown to contain less PCA than normal skin. My recommendation is to use Sodium PCA with glycerin for better performance.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Sodium-L-Lactate&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Sodium-L-Lactate<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3441\/95400\/PURASAL-S-HQ-60?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">PURASAL\u00ae S\/HQ60<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/3441\/Corbion-PURAC\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Corbion Purac<\/a>) is a natural humectant found in human skin as a component of NMF. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Sodium+Lactate&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Sodium Lactate<\/a> has good moisturizing properties and can increase epidermal lipid synthesis. When formulated at a PH of 3-4, it can also promote cell exfoliation and increase cell turnover. Care must, however, be used when formulating facial products to avoid stinging problems.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=propanediol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-swap-id=\"truncated_desc\">Propanediol<\/span><\/a> (<span data-swap-id=\"truncated_desc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=zemea&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Zemea\u00ae<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>Tate and Lyle) Zemea<span data-swap-id=\"truncated_desc\">\u00ae<\/span> combined with glycerin (1:1) is claimed to have similar moisturizing activity as all glycerin, with a better skin feel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Antimicrobial Potentiating Humectants<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Pentylene+Glycol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">1, 2 Pentylene Glycol<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3030\/210571\/Hydrolite-5?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Hydrolite\u00ae 5<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/3030\/Symrise?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Symrise<\/a>) is a good solvent and moisturizer that can significantly reduce preservative usage when used at 2-3%. It also has a non-tacky skin feel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Hexanediol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">1, 2 Hexanediol<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3030\/210572\/Hydrolite-6?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Hydrolite\u00ae 6<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Symrise) can significantly reduce preservative usage when used at 1-2%. It is also an excellent solvent that can significantly reduce surfactant concentration when solubilizing fragrances or actives into water.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3030\/210599\/SymDiol-68?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">SymDiol\u00ae 68<\/a> (1, 2-Hexanediol, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Caprylyl+Glycol%20Symrise&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Caprylyl Glycol<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Symrise) has excellent antimicrobial potentiation properties when used at .5%. Used at .5% in a formulation, it has also been shown to be as effective as 3% glycerin in moisturizing skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Humectant Solvents<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Hexanediol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">1, 2 Hexanediol<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Detail\/3030\/210572\/Hydrolite-6?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Hydrolite\u00ae 6<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Symrise) is an excellent solvent and one of the best I have evaluated<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=PEG-4&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">PEG-4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=PEG-8&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">8<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Dipropylene+Glycol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Dipropylene Glycol<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Pentylene+Glycol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">1, 2 Pentylene Glycol<\/a> (<a
