The IFT is the largest food show in the world. It’s also a great place to find new ingredient and processing technology. Many of the exhibiting suppliers don\u2019t actively sell into the personal care area, so their materials are unknown to most formulators. Every time I’ve attended I’ve\u00a0discovered innovative technology that I\u2019ve used\u00a0to develop new personal care formulations or help solve problems.<\/p>\n

Radio Frequency Co.<\/strong> has developed radio-frequency-based pasteurization\/disinfecting technology. An RF generator creates an alternating electric field between 2 electrodes. The material to be treated is then passed between the 2 electrodes, and water molecules in the product create heat which kills any microorganism. This could be a useful technology to reduce the microbial count in contaminated products or raw materials.<\/p>\n

Blue Marble Biomaterials<\/strong><\/a> is a biotech company that specializes in developing high value added chemicals from production waste streams.<\/p>\n

PGX<\/strong> is a novel spray drying process developed by Ceapro that can significantly change the properties of materials including particle size, water solubility, and porosity. It is also useful for purifying heat liable active ingredients.<\/p>\n

AstaReal, Inc<\/strong><\/a> sells algae-derived astaxanthin<\/a>. Astaxanthin is claimed to have 100-200X better antioxidant activity than beta carotene<\/a> or lutein<\/a> and has been shown to reduce UV-induced skin aging when both orally and topically applied. AstaREAL\u00ae L10<\/a>-Contains 2% astaxanthin and a water soluble form is available that contains 1.5% astaxanthin.<\/p>\n

Earthrise<\/strong> sells algae derivatives. Linablue\u00ae<\/span> is an approved water-soluble, blue colorant for food and cosmetic use derived from DIC spirulina<\/a> algae. The color is stable from a PH of 4.5-8 but requires a UV absorber for light stability.<\/p>\n

San-Ei Gen F.F.I. USA<\/a>–SANMELIN\u00ae POWDER R-20DS<\/a><\/strong> is an enzymatically modified isoquercitrin<\/span> that is water soluble and has strong UVA absorption and antioxidant activity. It is very useful for stabilizing UV-sensitive materials.<\/p>\n

Shandong Freda Biotechnology<\/a><\/strong> is the largest producer of gamma polyglutamic acid (PGA, Natto Gum) in China. They sell a high MW grade (700-1000K Daltons), a low MW grade (70-100K Daltons) and a crosslinked grade (MW 10000K Daltons). PGA has been shown to reduce TEWL, increase skin hydration, increase NMF, increase skin elasticity, and lighten skin.<\/p>\n

Ajinomoto<\/a>-Tanal\u00ae<\/span> 01\/W1 Brewtan<\/strong> is a high-purity, natural-based tannic acid that has iron-chelating, anti-browning, astringency, and strong antioxidant activity.<\/p>\n

Jiangyin Huachang Food Additive Co<\/strong>. sells taurine<\/a>. Taurine is believed to be an important epidermal osmolyte required to maintain keratinocyte hydration in a dry environment.<\/p>\n

Jubilant Life Sciences<\/a><\/strong> sells a natural-based, high-purity niacinamide<\/a> which is claimed to be cost competitive with synthetically produced material.<\/p>\n

InnoBio<\/a><\/strong> sells cold-water-soluble, powdered oil encapsulates that provide instant water dispersibility and oxygen protection. Powdered ingredients available include 50% flaxseed oil<\/a>, coconut oil<\/a>, sunflower oil<\/a>, 70% high oleic sunflower<\/a>, 5% lutein CWS<\/a>, 1% beta carotene CWS<\/a>, and 2.5% astaxanthin CWS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

CitroBio Inc.\u00a0<\/strong>offers CitroBio, a natural-based, GRAS antimicrobial agent that may be useful in helping to preserve personal care formulations.<\/p>\n

Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter & Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics & Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
