That\u2019s according to a recent article from <em>Inform<\/em>, a publication of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aocs.org\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">American Oil Chemists\u2019 Society<\/a>. Biosurfactants are produced by a variety of microorganisms and are categorized based on their molecular weight and chemical properties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Glycolipids&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Glycolipids<\/a> are a class of compounds that are representative of low-molecular-weight biosurfactants. Rhamnolipids are glycolipids produced by bacteria, most notably the Pseudomonas species. In their excellent article \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iisc.ernet.in\/currsci\/jul10\/articles19.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Microbial production of biosurfactants and their importance<\/a>,\u201d Karanth, Deo and Veenanadig list the microorganism source of various surfactants. The authors also provide the reader with a generous list of references on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being surface-active agents, rhamnolipids are purported to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=anti+aging&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">anti-aging<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/2357\/Anti-Microbial-Agents?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">anti-microbial<\/a> properties that are useful in the cosmetic industry. However, their utility extends beyond personal care, having been documented to provide benefits in industries such as agriculture and oil recovery. Despite their potential, large-scale, cost-effective commercialization of rhamnolipids remains a challenge today. This is primarily due to the high manufacturing costs driven by the multi-step purification process.
