But it amazes me that many of those born into the generation of unlimited information don\u2019t utilize the tools available to them.<\/p>\n<p>The advice here is for the coatings industry, but most facets are applicable to other industries. Even as young as college-age, if you\u2019ve decided on a profession, there are many ways to jumpstart your career and leverage the tools available to you.<\/p>\n<h2>LinkedIn<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>LinkedIn<\/strong><\/a> is an excellent professional social media site for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Networking with others in your field.<\/li>\n<li>Finding a mentor or coach for your career.<\/li>\n<li>Learning from those with experience by joining groups.<\/li>\n<li>Finding job opportunities by following companies<\/li>\n<li>Getting noticed by recruiters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can ask questions and join groups that are ancillary to your industry. If coatings (paint) is your focus, markets utilizing similar materials to paints include Household, Industrial and Institutional Cleaners (HI&amp;I), Personal Care, Adhesives, Sealants and Construction Products, etc.. Over the years, companies have learned to develop products for multiple markets, but sometimes you can still find a technological gems that you can leverage from another industry into your own. This could mean an application patent and peer recognition.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Helpful Tools &amp; Resources<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scifinder.cas.org\/scifinder\/login?TYPE=33554433&amp;REALMOID=06-b7b15cf0-642b-1005-963a-830c809fff21&amp;GUID=&amp;SMAUTHREASON=0&amp;METHOD=GET&amp;SMAGENTNAME=-SM-4nabTkS%2fosGe%2bcwnw4CEIRrNXRh5jymerczqRDh4%2f6GPI1bxHalWDbCWLch8PV9m&amp;TARGET=-SM-http%3a%2f%2fscifinder.cas.org%3a443%2fscifinder%2f\" target=\"_blank\">SciFinder<\/a> is a more powerful tool, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemspider.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ChemSpider<\/strong><\/a> is significantly less expensive (free) and very handy. Use it to find chemical structures, EH&amp;S data, CAS and suppliers, for example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freshpatents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>FreshPatents.com<\/strong><\/a> is an excellent method to track market developments as well as competitive activities. You choose the keywords to monitor. These could be a company\u2019s name, a technology (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=solar&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">solar<\/a>, biopolymers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings\/search?k=corrosion&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">corrosion<\/a>), an institution or name. You receive an alert for patent applications with those keywords.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freepatentsonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FreePatentsOnline.com<\/a><\/strong> is a much more versatile and complete site vs. using the USPTO, since you can also search non-patent literature and patents filed other than in the US. Derwent World Patents Index is a great site, but comes with a price that the other two do not have.<\/p>\n<h2>Literature<\/h2>\n<p>Available digitally, journals may be the best way to learn and develop your expertise. Most journals contain a section on trade shows and conferences, so you can plan ahead for budgeting these with your manager. They also often highlight a specific aspect of your industry \u2013 raw materials such as resins, additives, pigments, or the annual \u201cTop #\u201d paint companies by sales and volume. You can monitor people movement, company name changes and a host of other activities, besides many outstanding peer-reviewed technical papers.<\/p>\n<p>These are my favorite journals, but there are many, many more. And if you are in a specific market (such as Oil &amp; Gas), there are periodicals for them as well:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcimag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Paint and Coatings Industry<\/strong> (PCI)<br \/>\n<\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paint.org\/publications\/journals\/item\/355-coatingstech.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coatings Tech<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coatingsworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coatings World<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.european-coatings.com\/Publications\/EC-JOURNAL-eJournal\" target=\"_blank\">European Coatings Journal<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adhesivesmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adhesives &amp; Sealants Industry<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.happi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Household and Personal Products Industry<\/strong> (HAPPI) <\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Conferences and Trade shows<\/h2>\n<p>Conferences and trade shows are good places to both learn and network. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.american-coatings-show.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACA<\/a> show takes place in the U.S. every other year (next is 2016 in Indianapolis), and holds an exhibition in Europe in the odd years. There are also many technical symposia with varied value as far as their content and the cost to attend. Most local coatings societies (example: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandcoatingssociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Coatings Society<\/a>) provide a technical dinner program during the fall and winter, typically on a monthly basis with just one speaker. In the spring, there may be an \u201couting,\u201d which is more social, but may provide some technical content. These meetings offer both learning opportunities and the chance to network with others in your geographical location, which could be useful for a job change but is best for getting known.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a technical sales role with your company, you can get on the local society\u2019s schedule for a dinner meeting and work in customer calls around that dinner. He also managed the TS&amp;D group for coatings while at Dow Chemical (1995-99) and held positions at Rhodia (Laboratory Manager, Latex &amp; Specialty Polymers (1989-95)) and was the Development Chemist, exterior latex paints at Benjamin Moore &amp; Co. (1979-89). Mr. Hirsch has served in a consultancy capacity as a Director with the ChemQuest group, (chemquest.com) June 2021-March 2025 at OmniTech (omnitechintl.com) (2015-2022) for soy-based adhesives and coatings, Daikin America (daikin-america.com) (2011-2015) fluoropolymers and materials, and also with organizations that provide formal mentoring (TORCH 2018-present), coaching and leadership training, as well as the facilitation of problem-solving teams.
