While olfactory and visual appeals are important attributes of a product, tactile properties must also be optimized to meet consumers\u2019 expectations and ensure marketplace success. Since it is not uncommon for initial prototype formulations to be deficient in some or the other sensory attribute, sensory modifiers are staples of a formulators\u2019 toolbox and play a key role in refining the final product.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in the use of sensory modifiers can stem from a need to alter the feel of a product itself, or the perception of a product as it is applied to the area being treated \u2013 hair or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/3123\/Skin-Conditioning-Agents\/search?k=sensory+modifier&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skin<\/a>. Given that sensory modifiers are not listed as a Reported Function in the Personal Care Product Council\u2019s (PCPC) database, the formulator must know what specific deficiency needs to be addressed and what class of ingredients would most likely deliver the desired benefits. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Inorganics&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inorganics<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294959803&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talc<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294958104&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kaolin<\/a>, are commonly used to minimize greasiness or to improve the flow properties of a formulation. These and similar ingredients are classified as \u201cabsorbents\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Slip+Modifiers&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slip modifiers<\/a>\u201d and can easily be found listed under these functions.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>A formulator must know what specific sensory deficiency needs to be addressed and what class of ingredients would most likely deliver the desired benefits.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If, however, the intent is to reduce tackiness on skin during application, a search for \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Anti-Tack+Agents&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-tack<\/a>\u2019 ingredients in the PCPC database would be futile since this has not been officially designated as a Reported Function. Experienced product developers would likely first start with a search of the chemical class \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Esters&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">esters<\/a>,\u201d many of which can be found under the function \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Functionalities\/3123\/Skin-Conditioning-Agents\/Product\/search?k=Esters&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skin conditioning agents<\/a>.\u201d Similarly, the need to mitigate greasiness on skin can often be met by use of a variety of ingredients including synthetic polymers and starches like the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?trade=4294949857&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DRY-FLO\u00ae<\/a>, while application properties of pressed powders can usually benefit from inclusion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=microspheres&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microspheres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sensory modifiers are essential ingredients that are important in delivering a consumer-acceptable product and are represented by multiple chemical classes. Priscilla was born and raised in Trinidad, West Indies, but she considers Chicago her adopted hometown.
