\"MulticulturalCosmetics\"The development of cosmetics\u00a0for women of color has long been under-funded and under-researched. But makeup giant L\u2019Or\u00e9al is now heading the charge to introduce new and better shades to match diverse complexions\u00a0based on the work of cosmetic chemist Balanda Atis. That’s according to a recent article from online business news outlet\u00a0Fast Company<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Atis, an American of Haitian descent, tells\u00a0Fast Company<\/em>\u00a0that when she first joined L\u2019Or\u00e9al, the makeup they developed for African-American and Latina skin tones\u00a0was still “too pale for many women.” Atis found a new line of foundations created in 2006 disappointing, prompting her to approach makeup division management with her concerns. She\u00a0started a company-approved side project to research improvement of\u00a0the shades. The breakthrough came when her team discovered “a rarely used pigment, ultramarine blue<\/a>, that created deep, pure colors without sacrificing texture and vibrancy.”<\/p>\n

Nine years later, Atis works on\u00a0creating makeup for women of color full time at L\u2019Or\u00e9al. The brand has “leveraged her work to create more than 30 new shades across L\u2019Or\u00e9al’s brands, from the mass-market Maybelline to the upscale Lanc\u00f4me,” says\u00a0Fast Company<\/em>.<\/p>\n
