Here, I cover the basics, and give you formulation tips and product suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>Micellar dispersions are the most common type of clear, oil-in-water dispersions using surfactants and\/or solvents. If the particle size of the dispersed phase is\u00a0&lt;100 nm, the dispersion normally appears clear. Typically these dispersions are used to solubilize fragrance oils into water based products and have a particle size of ~5nm.<\/p>\n<h3>Formulation tips:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Generally, more polar oils are easier to solubilize into water and require less surfactant. For example, 10 grams of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294964359&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polysorbate 20<\/a> can solubilize ~1-3 grams of fragrance oils and only .1-.3g of non-polar oils.<br \/>\n(EU: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294964359&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polysorbate 20<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>When solubilizing most oils, start with a ratio of 10 parts solubilizer to 1 part oil and titrate down. For fragrances, start with 5 parts solubilizer to 1 part fragrance oil.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Liquid+solubilizer&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liquid solubilizers<\/a> are preferred vs. solid types due to ease of processing.<br \/>\n(EU: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22Liquid+solubilizer%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liquid solubilizers<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Water soluble solvents, in which the oil dissolves, can help reduce the amount of solubilizer needed.<\/li>\n<li>Solvents can usually help reduce the amount of solubilizer needed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=1%2C+2%20hexanediol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1, 2 hexanediol<\/a> is by far the best, followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294943566&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1, 2 pentanediol<\/a>, diethylene glycol mono ethyl ether, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294962005&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dimethyl isosorbide<\/a>.<br \/>\n(EU: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294947430&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1, 2 hexanediol<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294943566&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1, 2 pentanediol<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294962005&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dimethyl isosorbide<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Use combinations of solubilizers for better efficiency. Many of the most efficient ones are surfactant blends.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor the particle size distribution changes (sub-micron particle size analyzer) over time using clarity loss or particle size changes as endpoints.<\/li>\n<li>Generally, a loss in clarity or particle size change over time can be caused by Ostwald Ripening. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
