{"id":3401,"date":"2015-11-13T17:18:56","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T22:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/knowledge\/?p=3401"},"modified":"2015-11-13T17:18:56","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T22:18:56","slug":"press-release-honda-delphi-dupont-automotive-capture-powertrain-innovation-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/3401\/press-release-honda-delphi-dupont-automotive-capture-powertrain-innovation-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release: Honda, Delphi, DuPont Automotive Capture Powertrain Innovation Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">DETROIT, Nov. 12, 2015 \u2013 Honda, Delphi Automotive and DuPont Automotive captured the most innovative use of plastics award in the powertrain category at last night\u2019s 45th Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE\u00ae) Automotive Innovation Awards Competition &amp; Gala.\u00a0 The team was awarded for the development of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delphi.com\/manufacturers\/auto\/powertrain\/alternative-fuel-systems\/multec-ht-fuel-inj\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s1\">Delphi Multec\u00ae 3.5 Heated Tip Port Fuel Injector<\/span><\/a> used on the Honda Fit and Honda City vehicles sold in Brazil to improve cold-start performance in ethanol-fueled vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2015\/11\/Heated_Tip-_Injector_A-e1447452527545.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3402 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2015\/11\/Heated_Tip-_Injector_A-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"Delphi Multec 3.5 Heated Tip Port Fuel Injector\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Multec\u00ae 3.5 Heated Tip Port Fuel Injector has an integrated heating device that rapidly heats ethanol fuel so it can evaporate and be ignited more efficiently in cold weather. The integrated component, overmolded with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupont.com\/products-and-services\/plastics-polymers-resins\/thermoplastics\/products\/zytel-htn.html?src=delphi_zytelhtn\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s1\">DuPont\u2122 Zytel\u00ae HTN<\/span><\/a> PPA, eliminates a secondary gasoline tank, commonly used to improve cold start.\u201cCold start is a fairly pervasive issue in vehicles that run on 100 percent ethanol (E100), like those in Brazil,\u201d said Dave Dues, Delphi Flex Fuel Vehicles Program chief engineer.\u00a0 E100 does not form a combustible vapor at cold temperatures so engine-starting under these conditions is not possible with a conventional system.\u00a0 In Brazil where E100 fuel is commonly used, most automakers add a second gasoline fuel system for starting below 55\u00b0F (13\u00b0C). \u201cThe team captured this award with an innovation that not only solves the issue but does it in a way that reduces weight by 9 kg to improve fuel economy, lowers emissions and significantly lowers cost by eliminating that secondary gasoline sub-tank system,\u201d added Dues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Zytel\u00ae HTN PPA was selected to overmold the component because it offers lower melt viscosity than competing PPA, which helps protect the sub-assembly during molding.\u00a0 It also offers better elongation than other PPAs to survive thermal cycling without stress cracking.\u00a0 Once the material family was selected, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupont.com\/industries\/automotive.html?src=pr_auto_delphi\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s1\">DuPont<\/span><\/a> developed a new electrically friendly, heat-stabilized grade that also can be laser marked for identification.<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_3403\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 194px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2015\/11\/Heated_Tip-_Injector_B-e1447452755923.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3403\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2015\/11\/Heated_Tip-_Injector_B-e1447452755923.jpg\" alt=\"Honda, Delphi Automotive and DuPont Automotive captured the most innovative use of plastics award in the powertrain category at the 45th Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE\u00ae) Automotive Innovation Awards Competition &amp; Gala for the development of the Delphi Multec\u00ae 3.5 Heated Tip Port Fuel Injector, which is used to improve cold start performance on Honda Fit and Honda City ethanol-fueled vehicles sold in Brazil. (Photo Credit: Delphi Electronics)<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p class=\"p1\">Extensive Moldflow\u00ae analysis was performed by Delphi and DuPont to ensure the mold filling produced a knit-line free part.\u00a0 In addition, cavity pressure transducers were added to the mold tooling to prevent collapse of the thin metal heating tube during overmolding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cZytel\u00ae HTN PPA offers high performance plus ease of molding making it a great choice for this application,\u201d said Randy White, DuPont Automotive global powertrain segment leader.\u00a0 \u201cConnecting early with Delphi allowed us to modify the material to the performance requirements as they evolved through the development cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Zytel\u00ae HTN PPA is often used by the automotive industry to make engine cooling components, such as thermostat housings and water pumps, and to make powertrain components, such as charged air coolers, transmission housings, engine oil systems, brake systems, ignition systems and motors.
