Deckner realized he needed to develop new ways to innovate. \u201cFormulation is all about material science and solving problems,\u201d he explains. And he felt lucky to have the freedom in his work to seek out new ways to solve these problems, such as getting out of his personal care comfort zone to attend trade shows in other industries.<\/p>\n<p>Deckner was the first beauty care formulator at P&amp;G to start attending other industry shows as a tactic for innovating. For him, connecting the dots between materials used in formulating coatings, for example, to those used for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">personal care<\/a> products was a no-brainer. \u201cOne of the easiest ways to innovate is to reapply technology from one industry to another,\u201d says Deckner. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what you\u2019re formulating, the principals are identical.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Industries That Inspire<\/h3>\n<p>Are there particular industries that formulators should focus on if they plan to try his tactic? Deckner says the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">paints and coatings industry<\/a>, as well as the food industry, supply the most valuable inspiration for personal care innovators. \u201cIf you had to pick an area that was the core competency for P&amp;G, it would be substrate modification,\u201d Deckner elaborates. \u201cAnd then look at the paints and coatings industry \u2013 it\u2019s all about substrates, as well\u2026 dispersing pigments, emulsifying, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, one of Deckner\u2019s most valuable discoveries was made at a coatings show he attended in Indianapolis. There he found a new type of abrasive that led to the filing of patents at P&amp;G. \u201cShows stimulate your thinking,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can\u2019t innovate unless you\u2019re constantly being stimulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">food industry<\/a>, Deckner points out that they have far more sophisticated processing abilities than the personal care industry. \u201cThey\u2019re clever at creating different textures and different product forms, including variations in mouthfeel, color, texture and shape,\u201d he explains. And processing gives a competitive advantage in the personal care arena.<\/p>\n<p>He also notes several new types of rheology modifiers in the food industry that are now in marketed personal care products. Another benefit of looking to the food industry for inspiration: formulators can rest assured there won\u2019t be safety issues. \u201cYou have to be much more careful with paint and coatings materials,\u201d says Deckner.<\/p>\n<h3>Make a Game-Plan<\/h3>\n<p>But Deckner doesn\u2019t just show up at one of these shows and dive in. He suggests going in with a plan of action. \u201cThe more pre-work you do, the more efficient you are with your use of time,\u201d he says. And your plan of action will depend on your current interests and priorities. He explains, \u201cI still look at everything in general, but I always have a main focal area.\u201d He suggests going through the literature that is sent out about the show beforehand to identify the most important areas to explore.<\/p>\n<p>How often should you go? Deckner feels that attending trade shows in other industries every 2-3 years is more than adequate. \u201cYou\u2019re looking for big ideas,\u201d he says. \u201cThings don\u2019t change rapidly enough to warrant going every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Communication is Key<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to consider how you\u2019ll communicate with suppliers and professionals in other industries. While some general inquiries will be straight-forward, this is not always the case. \u201cThey\u2019re not used to your industry,\u201d Deckner reminds us. \u201cYou have to frame the problems you have in terms they will understand, because their industry will use different terminology than your own.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Trends to Look For Now<\/h3>\n<p>So what should formulators attending other industry trade shows be looking at now? Deckner says one of the hottest trends in food is the nutraceutical area. New types of materials used in nutraceuticals can be identified and reapplied in cosmetics. And, he says, \u201cif you know they\u2019re coming out of food, you know they\u2019ll also be more cost effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For both the coatings and food industries, Deckner feels it\u2019s also definitely worth it to take a close look at their instrumentation. \u201cFor example, paints and coatings is highly advanced in the rheology instrumentation area,\u201d he says. \u201cThe impact that measurement can have on your ability to innovate always amazes me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what resources he recommends for formulators who don\u2019t have the time or freedom to travel to shows, Deckner replies as if the answer is a little too obvious. \u201cThey can go to Prospector\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">food industry<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Coatings?st=31\" target=\"_blank\">paint and coatings<\/a> search engines and browse materials,\u201d he says. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport. Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter &amp; Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
