The ideal choice depends on the desired formulation properties such as charge compatibility (anionic, cationic, or nonionic), PH, clarity, electrolyte tolerance, and skin feel. All natural aqueous-based thickeners can be divided into soluble and swellable types with either a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=chitin&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chitin<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=chitosan&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chitosan<\/a>\u00a0(EU: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=chitin&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chitin<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=chitosan&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chitosan<\/a>), cellulosic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=starch&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starch<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=starch&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>), or polysaccharide backbone.<\/p>\n<p>Some naturally based materials also contain both soluble and swellable fractions. You should also consider evaluating combinations of different types of natural-based thickeners, especially soluble and swellable types since viscosity synergies often occur.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the insolubility of cellulose or starch, chemical modifications are normally required for solubility so they wouldn\u2019t be considered all natural. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Polysaccharide&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polysaccharide<\/a>-based (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Polysaccharide&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>) thickeners are normally extracted from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=seaweed&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seaweed<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=seaweed&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>), seeds, bark, or made by fermentation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keltrol Advanced Performance Xanthan Gum<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/6576\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CP Kelco<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/2535\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>) is an anionic, soluble polysaccharide and the most commonly used natural personal care thickener. Keltrol Advanced Performance is much easier to hydrate in the presence of a solvent or salt and is better for suspending solids in thin dispersions than regular grades of xanthan. A 1% solution has a viscosity of 13K cps and is salt and PH tolerant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kelset (Sodium Alginate)<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/1453\/FMC-BioPolymer\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FMC BioPolymer<\/a>\u00a0is a seaweed-derived thickener. It has good gelling properties and skin feel (1% gel- 27K cps). Gels are not salt stable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Actigum CS11 (Scleroglucan)<\/strong> from Cargill is a nonionic, soluble polysaccharide that has good salt and PH tolerance. A 1% solution has a viscosity of 2-5K cps, 2% 61k cps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Imulsifi-A30 (Orange Fiber)<\/strong> from Fiberstar\u00a0is a swellable citrus fiber that has a hot processed viscosity at 5% of 10K cps and 30K cold. It can tolerate a maximum salt load of 3%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kelcogel CG-HA (High acyl Gellan gum)<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/6576\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CP Kelco<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/2535\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>)\u00a0is the most efficient polysaccharide based thickener I have evaluated in water only. A .5% gel has a viscosity of 54K cps. It is not salt stable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grinsted Succinoglycan J (Succinoglycan)<\/strong> from Danisco is a anionic, soluble polysaccharide produced by fermentation and one of the most efficient soluble natural based thickeners on the market. It is stable to electrolyte, and high\/low PH. A 1% gel has a viscosity of 23K cps with 3% salt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genuvisco TPC-1 (Carrageenan)<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/6576\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CP Kelco<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/2535\/CP-Kelco\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>)\u00a0is an Iota form of carrageenan designed for cold processing that is stable over a PH of 3.5. The processed viscosity is low until electrolyte is added. A 1% gel has a viscosity of 18K with 3% salt added.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gelcarin GP 379 (Carrageenan)<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/1453\/FMC-BioPolymer\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FMC BioPolymer<\/a> is an Iota form of carrageenan that rapidly hydrates at RT. Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter &amp; Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
