While the first half of the report covers sodium reduction, the second half focuses on sugar reduction, with a spotlight on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=stevia&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stevia<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=stevia&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Europe led new product introductions containing stevia, with North America trailing just behind. Mintel says\u00a0that stevia was seen in several new categories in 2013, as well. New product launches included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=yogurt&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yogurt<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=yogurt&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=ice+cream&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice cream<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=ice+cream&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=candy&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candy<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=candy&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=condiments&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condiments<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=condiments&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=snacks&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snacks<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/Food\/search?k=snacks&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>). And the report notes research that says consumers are increasingly interested in carbonated soft drinks that contain natural sweeteners, like stevia, rather than artificial ones, like aspartame, because of concerns about health, calories and flavor.<\/p>\n<p>What does the future hold for stevia? Since Mintel&#8217;s report, products launched containing stevia have continued to grow globally. With the recent recommendation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/03\/05\/health-sugar-who-idINL6N0M23IK20140305?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> that sugar consumption be limited to less than 5% of total energy intake (or about 25 grams), I predict this trend will continue worldwide as formulators try to maintain sweetness in products without sacrificing flavor or liking scores in consumer testing.\u00a0 The use of stevia in combination with other sweeteners and bulking agents will aid formulators in producing products that are comparable to their current product range.<\/p>\n<p>Read the report now:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/Detail\/4567\/358900\/Reducing-Salt-and-Sugar-Perils-and-Potential?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reducing Salt &amp; She has worked as a consultant for nutrition products, and has acted as a Manager and Director of Research and Development at companies in the bakery and nutrition fields. Jill held multiple titles with Gerber Products Company from 1995 \u2013 2004. During her tenure, she managed and developed formulas relating to bakery, cereal and dry blended products. Jill worked to create, improve and reformulate products, mindful of ingredient origins, nutritional value and consumer acceptability. Jill holds a B.S. in Bakery Science and Management from Kansas State University. She is a Certified Food Scientist, and is the President\u00a0of her local chapter of the Institute of Food Technologists. Jill is also an accomplished seamstress, textile designer and costume maker.
