Superfoods are popping up in the personal-care aisle, adding trend-forward ingredient interest to shampoos, serums and more. Future-leaning formulators are starting to pay attention to the popularity of these \u201cfunctional foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com\/Market-Trends\/Superfood-ingredients-getting-big-in-beauty\/?utm_source=newsletter_daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=08-Jun-2016&amp;c=c5clFfne%2Bl5izWkZ7vqLMPwND7ooLjLP&amp;p2=\"><i>Cosmetics Design-Europe<\/i><\/a> \u00a0says that international passion for organic and natural products is fueling the superfoods craze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRates of \u2018superfood\u2019 new product development have tripled in the past five years, according to Mintel, and among brands such as Origins, Aveda and Kiehl\u2019s, it seems the trend has now made its way across to beauty,\u201d reports the site.<\/p>\n<p>Google is also reporting an uptick in searches for functional foods, one of the larger trends the company highlighted in its recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/articles\/2016-food-trends-google.html\">2016 Food Trends Report<\/a>. The search giant says that though consumers\u2019 initial interest in superfoods is nutritional, their name-recognition translates to other industries:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven beauty brands can capitalize on these trends. Some are adding trending functional ingredients to their products\u2014see Kiehl&#8217;s Turmeric &amp; Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque, Freeman&#8217;s Apple Cider Vinegar 4-in-1 Foaming Clay, and OGX&#8217;s Coconut Milk Shampoo. (Ulta Beauty is one retailer doing an especially good job capturing search interest in the latter two products.)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here at UL Prospector, we decided to investigate how formulators have been responding to this superfoods-as-skin-care trend. We used UL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulindustryanalytics.com\/\">Industry Analytics<\/a> tool to track trending personal-care searches for functional food ingredients.<\/p>\n<h2>Superfood searches are trending upward since 2013<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/07\/picture-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the chart above, you can see high volume superfood searches in the personal-care industry include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=coconut+oil&amp;st=31\">coconut oil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=moringa&amp;st=31\">moringa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=avocado+oil&amp;st=31\">avocado oil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=ginger&amp;st=31\">ginger<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=quinoa&amp;st=31\">quinoa<\/a>. All of these ingredients show solid volume and percentage interest change growth since 2013, although interest in avocado oil has shown a pattern of recent interest decrease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/07\/picture-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1044\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although at a lower overall volume of searches than the first grouping, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=seaweed&amp;st=31\">seaweed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=amaranth&amp;st=31\">amaranth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=turmeric&amp;st=31\">turmeric<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=pumpkin+seeds&amp;st=31\">pumpkin seeds<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=baobab&amp;st=31\">baobab<\/a> all show solid growth (see chart above). Note that seaweed searches are making a big surge in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/07\/picture-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1031\" height=\"668\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At an even smaller search volume\u2014but still growing\u2014are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=apple+cider+vinegar&amp;st=31&amp;so=&amp;sl=39738852\">apple cider vinegar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=arrowroot&amp;st=31\">arrowroot<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=daikon+radish&amp;st=31\">daikon radish<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=chia+seeds&amp;st=31\">chia seeds<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=kefir&amp;st=31\">kefir<\/a> (see chart above). Chia seeds have shown especially significant search-volume growth since 2013. Searches for kefir only begin to make an appearance in the second quarter of 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Cumin+seeds&amp;st=31\">Cumin seeds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=cardamom&amp;st=31\">cardamom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=sacha+inchi+&amp;st=31\">sacha inchi <\/a>are all trending functional foods that do show up in Prospector personal-care searches, but their popularity is erratic and doesn\u2019t show any clear pattern of growth.<\/p>\n<p>Not all popular functional foods have cracked the personal-care market yet. Trend-tracking formulators can watch superfoods making a splash in the grocery aisles to see where consumer interest may go next. Look out for emerging superfoods such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=bitter+melon&amp;st=31&amp;so=&amp;sl=39738889\">bitter melon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=jackfruit&amp;st=31\">jackfruit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=rice+vinegar&amp;st=31&amp;so=&amp;sl=39738912\">rice vinegar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=teff&amp;st=31&amp;so=&amp;sl=39738915\">teff<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/Food\/search?k=lucuma&amp;st=31&amp;so=&amp;sl=39738919\">lucuma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/ulindustryanalytics.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Explore Industry Analytics Now<\/a><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Superfoods are no longer just for your smoothies.
