Since first introduced to the personal-care industry by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Suppliers\/2366\/Shin-Etsu-Silicones-of-America\/search?sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shin-Etsu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1988, they have had a major impact on color cosmetic, antiperspirant and skin-care formulations due to their outstanding properties. Typical uses include thickening, absorbing oil\/sebum, mattifying, feel modification and to produce water in oil emulsions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are usually prepared by reacting a methyl hydrogen polysiloxane with a cross-linking agent (usually a vinyl-containing compound) in the presence of a \u00a0silicone solvent and a platinum catalyst. The mixture is then diluted using a carrier solvent with high-shear processing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical carrier solvents used include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Dimethicone&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dimethicone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (.5-10 cSt fluids), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Cyclopentasiloxane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclopentasiloxane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Isododecane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isododecane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Isohexadecane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isohexadecane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Isononyl+Isononanoate&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isononyl isononanoate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using alkyl hydrogen polysiloxanes, elastomers with better organic compatibility can be achieved. Emulsifying elastomer gels contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=alkyl+C12&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alkyl-functionalized (C12) silicone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cross-linked with polyether and swollen in various organic oils. These can be used to produce emulsifier-free, quick-breaking, sterically stabilized water-in-oil emulsions that contain over 90 percent water. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Silicone Resins<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silicone resins are hydrid molecules comprised of inorganic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294959767&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and organopolysiloxanes that have a three-dimensional network made up of principally tri- or tetrafunctional units. Silicone resins are typically produced by reacting chlorosilanes in the presence of catalysts and with chemicals, such as an alkyl or phenyl chloride, in a fluidized bed reactor. The insoluble powders are referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Polymethylsilsesquioxane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polymethylsilsesquioxane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are used for soft-focus or wrinkle-blurring effects and as feel-modifiers to give a smooth, soft, non-tacky skin feel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soluble resins are called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Trimethylsiloxysilicate+mq&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trimethylsiloxysilicate (MQ)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Polypropylsilsesquioxane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polypropylsilsesquioxane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Polyphenylsilsesquioxane&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polyphenylsilsesquioxane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Alkyldimethylsilyl&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alkyldimethylsilyl polypropylsilsesquioxanes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are used as film formers to improve the wear\/transfer and wash resistance of cosmetics. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=MQ+resin&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MQ resins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are normally too brittle to be used by themselves and are usually combined with other resins or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22silicone+fluid%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silicone fluids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for optimal film formation. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Silicone Copolyols<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=silicone+copolyol&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silicone copolyols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are surface-active ingredients that contain both a water-insoluble silicone backbone and water-soluble polyether groups. The ratio of the silicone to polyether\u2014and the molecular weight and composition of the components\u2014determine the solubility and specific properties of a product. The polyether groups can either be terminal or pendant on the silicone backbone. Silicone copolyols are made by hydrosilylation of apolyoxyalkylene monoallyl ether and an SiH fluid. They are used as dispersing agents, wetting agents, to reduce formulation tack, condition hair and as emulsifiers for both water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
