All in the Prospector Knowledge Center.\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" \/>Due to environmental impact of some soy agriculture practices, and increasing consumer concern about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), food manufacturers worldwide are taking steps to ensure they follow standards for responsibly cultivated soy.<\/p>\n<p>Many food products contain some soy component, though it\u2019s not always highly visible to the consumer. It can enter the food formulation process at various points in the supply chain, starting as early as animal feed.<\/p>\n<p>In order to mitigate brand risk due to negative consumer feedback, and in the interest of preserving the environment, food formulators need to be aware of their companies\u2019 policies on sustainable sourcing, and their supply chain certification status.<\/p>\n<h4>Global Soy Certification<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Established in 2006, the Roundtable on Responsible Soy (RTRS) has established a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsiblesoy.org\/certification\/nuestra-certificacion\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">framework for certifying the sustainability of soy products<\/a>. Certification is valid for five years. You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsiblesoy.org\/about-rtrs\/members\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">search for RTRS participating members<\/a> on their website.<\/li>\n<li>By the end of 2017, one-third of of soy imported into Europe will be certified sustainable, says RTRS<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>RTRS signed a cooperation agreements with Netherlands-based certification agency GMP+<sup>2<\/sup> and ProTerra<sup>3<\/sup> to simplify the certification process and help meet global demands. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proterrafoundation.org\/index.php\/members-of-the-proterra-network\" target=\"_blank\">See ProTerra\u2019s member list here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, 98 percent of U.S. soybeans are certified sustainable, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitedsoybean.org\/media-center\/issue-briefs\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Soybean Sustainability Assurance Protocol<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Beyond Food<\/h4>\n<p>There is also growing interest in using and developing soy beyond the traditional food industry. Soy offers a renewable, biobased alternative to petroleum-based products. Manufacturers are now offering a variety of biobased products, from fuel to cleaning supplies to roofing materials.<\/p>\n<p>These products reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and offer environmental and health benefits, such as lower VOCs, reduce exposure to toxic chemicals as well as irritation from odors, and more<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Further, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biopreferred.gov\/BioPreferred\/faces\/pages\/AboutBioPreferred.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\">Federal BioPreferred program<\/a>, the USDA designates categories of biobased products which receive a federal procurement preference.<\/p>\n<h3>Searching for non-GMO soy products for your food formulation?<\/h3>\n<p>Prospector offers more than 150 listings from global suppliers.
