According to the World Health Organization<\/a>, more than 80 percent of urban dwellers (in cities that track pollution) are exposed to unsafe levels of air pollution. Recent research shows that air pollution\u2014including small and fine particulate matter (PM), NO2<\/sub> and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)\u2014is not only deathly damaging to the lungs and heart<\/a>, but to our skin, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cExposure of the skin to air pollutants has been associated with skin aging and inflammatory or allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or acne, while skin cancer is among the most serious effects,\u201d write the authors of a University of Athens 2014 review article<\/a> in Frontiers in Environmental Science.<\/p>\n

This February, researchers tied facial age spots to both PMs and NO2<\/sub><\/a> in Asian and Caucasian women. The Guardian interviewed<\/a> co-author Jean Krutmann, who told the paper that, yes, sun exposure, tobacco use and other environmental factors lead to skin aging, \u201cBut what we can say is that, at least for the pigment on the cheeks, it seems air pollution is the major driver.\u201d<\/p>\n

As science builds its case, marketers are tracking consumers\u2019 needs for anti-pollution products. Mintel reports that Chinese shoppers are leading the charge<\/a>, thanks to high levels of air pollution in the country: \u201cThe term \u2018PM 2.5\u2019 (the abbreviation of Particulate Matter 2.5, which refers to air pollutants with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less) has become a marketing claim in Chinese skincare products.\u201d<\/p>\n

Western consumers are also feeding demand for protective and healing skin-care products, making this a growing global trend. Premium Beauty News sums up the issue<\/a>: \u201cProtecting the skin from pollution has become essential, and consumers are expecting specific products to be developed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both BASF\u2019s Purisoft<\/a> and Solabia\u2019s Glycofilm 1.5P<\/a> have seen steady search growth over the past two years while newer entries, including TRI-K\u2019s PhytoVie\u00ae<\/sup> Defense<\/a>, Lipotec\u2019s Pollushield\u2122<\/a> and Solabia\u2019s Pollustop\u00ae<\/sup><\/a>, have seen fast interest.<\/p>\n

Another category aims to fight pollution damage with anti-oxidants, anti-glycation ingredients and more. Search volume has grown for Mibelle AG\u2019s Detoxophane<\/a>, Provital\u2019s Pronalen Bio-Protect<\/a>, TRI-K\u2019s Hydropom<\/a> and Seppic\u2019s Native Essence<\/a>. Symrise\u2019s SymUrban\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> has shown the most dramatic increase in formulator interest in the past two years.<\/p>\n

The ingredients that power those anti-pollution compounds are also seeing boosts in their search volume. Long-term search growth is evident for Niacinamide<\/a> (Vitamin B3),\u00a0Tomato<\/a>, Moringa oleifera<\/a> and Crithmum maritimum<\/a> (sea fennel). Tephrosia purpurea<\/a> (wild indigo) has just come on the scene in 2016, but it is showing a big percentage leap in interest. Wild Indigo is the key ingredient in Givaudan\u2019s Neurophroline\u2122<\/a>, a new stress-fighting extract.<\/p>\n
