{"id":5448,"date":"2016-10-26T12:19:50","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T18:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/knowledge\/?p=5448"},"modified":"2022-06-01T08:17:23","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T14:17:23","slug":"pe-k-show-recap-plastics-materials-trends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/5448\/pe-k-show-recap-plastics-materials-trends\/","title":{"rendered":"K Show 2016 Recap: Assessing Future Material Trends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no better place to take the pulse of the global plastics industry than at the massive, triennial trade show known as \u201cK\u201d (for \u201cKunststoff\u201d). This year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.k-online.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K 2016 trade fair<\/a> in D\u00fcsseldorf, Germany, attracted some 230,000 attendees from 160 countries to visit 3,285 exhibits that filled all 19 halls.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all of the plastics industry\u2019s global leaders came together for eight intensive days and UL Prospector met with dozens of firms and executives to assess some of the key products and developments likely to impact the industry in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>We sat down with officials from <a href=\"https:\/\/plastics.ulprospector.com\/manufacturers\/44\/sabic-innovative-plastics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SABIC<\/a>, the Saudi petrochemical and plastics giant, to get a sense of what factors they see shaping key industry segments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5478\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 350px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5478\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/10\/SABIC-OcchielloBertinchamps-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"Ernesto Occhiello and Dr. Fabrice Bertinchamps spoke with UL Prospector at K Show 2016. To him, two factors stand out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Demographic changes<\/strong> &#8212; from an aging population that will need more healthcare, to the rise of a larger middle class worldwide with more disposable income, leading to a broader distribution of wealth and a greater demand for durable goods; plus<\/li>\n<li>Continued <strong>advances in technology<\/strong>, specifically electronics, and the greater use of sensors, artificial intelligence, cloud technology, robotics, 3D printing, and the like. One key will be to capture and manipulate the resulting torrent of data and feedback into something \u201ceconomically relevant.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Such trends are a good fit for SABIC\u2019s portfolio of specialty materials, which address the dimensions of thermal resistance, mechanical resistance, electrical behavior and optical behavior, and future material demands will keep rotating around those elements.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to high-end electronics, for instance, the <strong>continued miniaturization of devices<\/strong> will mean that heat will always be an issue, and materials will need to operate at high temperatures without deformation or loss of properties. Even in robotics, Occhiello said, heat transfer will be vital since such products, which often include several motors, tend to run hot.<\/p>\n<p>At K, SABIC also highlighted some of its work in <strong>3D printing<\/strong>, including a sleek, prototype aircraft seat. The ergonomically advanced seat, designed by Studio Gavari and printed by <a href=\"https:\/\/plastics.ulprospector.com\/materials\/6142\/stratasys?st=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stratasys<\/a>, using filament made from SABIC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/materials.ulprospector.com\/Profile.aspx?I=34&amp;E=100408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultem\u2122 9085 resin<\/a>. In addition, the resulting seat has fewer parts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5479\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 350px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5479 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Gavari-aircraft-seat_350x316.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Gavari in Italy worked closely with SABIC to design this prototype aircraft seat, which Stratasys made via 3D printing using a polyetherimide blend. Learn more in the Prospector Knowledge Center.\" width=\"350\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Gavari-aircraft-seat_350x316.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Gavari-aircraft-seat_350x316-300x271.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">3D printed ergonomic prototype aircraft seat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also in the aircraft arena, SABIC highlighted its <a href=\"https:\/\/search.ulprospector.com\/?q=clear+lexan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clear Lexan\u2122<\/a> XHR sheet series. Compared to glass-based transparent products, this polycarbonate sheet is 250 times more impact resistant, up to 50 times lighter, and offers 80 percent light transmission, while meeting all necessary regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of transparent, lightweight sheet, SABIC also displayed a portion of the ICEhouse\u2122, where ICE stands for \u201cInnovation for the Circular Economy.\u201d The project represents how structures can easily be built, disassembled and reused with advanced materials supporting the circular economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5481\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 352px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5481\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/10\/SABIC-ICEhouse_350x185.jpg\" alt=\"This reusable, energy-efficient ICEhouse structure uses an interlocking aluminum frame and multiwall PC sheet, and is meant to showcase circular-economy opportunities in building and construction. Learn more in the Prospector Knowledge Center.\" width=\"352\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-ICEhouse_350x185.jpg 352w, https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-ICEhouse_350x185-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Reusable, energy-efficient ICEhouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The energy-efficient ICEhouse uses an aluminium frame structure and several forms of PC sheeting. Used on the structure\u2019s translucent walls and ceilings, multiwall sheets can offer energy savings of up to 50 percent compared to monolayer glass.<\/p>\n<p>SABIC also is actively developing <strong>carbon fiber compounds<\/strong>. \u201cEverybody would love to have a cheaper carbon fiber,\u201d said Occhiello, \u201cbut to me the key thing is that we have to get smarter at using it. \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isotropy#Materials_science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isotropic [design]<\/a> is current and perfect for metals,\u201d he noted, \u201cbut\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anisotropy#Material_science_and_engineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anisotropic<\/a>\u00a0has very good potential for composites.\u201d Occhiello suggests that wisely applying anisotropic design will reduce the amount of fiber needed in composite parts, \u201cand by doing so, you automatically get a cost reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, Dr. Fabrice Bertinchamps, SABIC\u2019s global leader for all polymer products except polyethylene, referenced a new automotive glazing application that is about to go commercial in China. That application involves the use of polycarbonate in a side rear window in a sport-utility-type vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Bertinchamps said that the <strong>push for lightweighting<\/strong>, good structural properties and lower costs are helping to drive greater penetration of classical thermoplastics &#8211; such as long glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene &#8211; into vehicles. Automakers tend to use such materials to make large molded components and semi-structural parts such as instrument panel carriers, tailgates, front-end modules and seat structures.<\/p>\n<p>Another growth area, he suggested, is the <strong>continued replacement of metals with plastic\/metal hybrid structures<\/strong>. Indeed, perhaps the most imposing sight on SABIC\u2019s K show stand was the full-size cab of Scania AB\u2019s latest-generation truck model. This truck includes more than 30 applications with thermoplastic materials from SABIC, totaling some 140 kg per vehicle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5482\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 350px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5482\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Scania-truck_350x262.jpg\" alt=\"This latest-generation Scania truck incorporates some 30 thermoplastic parts, and boasts 5 percent better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. Learn more in the Prospector Knowledge Center.\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Scania-truck_350x262.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SABIC-Scania-truck_350x262-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Latest-generation Scania truck, incorporating about 30 thermoplastic parts and boasts five percent better fuel efficiency than its predecessor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another megatrend is <strong>urbanization<\/strong>. By 2050, the United Nations estimates the global population will swell to 9.6 billion, and 70 percent of those people will live in urban areas. These factors will drive the need for both more energy-efficient personal vehicles and affordable mass-transportation systems.<\/p>\n<p>This in turn will drive greater adoption of electric or advanced hybrid powertrains in cars and trucks, while\u00a0elevating the need for efficient railroads and subways. The European Rail Research Advisory Council, for example, estimates that up to 9,300 new light-rail vehicles and some 14,000 subway cars will likely be needed over a 20-year period.<\/p>\n<p>Bertinchamps sees another major trend of importance &#8212; <strong>the electrification of secondary cities<\/strong> in places such as China. Some governments are offering strong incentives for developing low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs) \u2014 all-electric, lightweight, very small cars that typically have top speeds of 60 km per hour.\u00a0Since these travel at such low speeds, he explained, they are not subject to the same regulatory requirements in terms of body structure, which means more opportunities for using plastic composites.<\/p>\n<p>The above touches on just some of the emerging and expanding market opportunities for advanced plastics and plastic composites.
