\"nyscctechsm\"NYSCC Suppliers’ Day is the largest personal care ingredient trade show in the US, and it’s a terrific venue to learn about new technology. From natural extracts and natural-based film forming polymers to exfoliating beads and photo stabilizers, this year’s event included a rich variety of new products. I kept track of my favorites and have included them below for you.<\/p>\n

Pongamia Extract (Pongamol) by Givaudan<\/strong><\/h5>\n

This is\u00a0a natural extract from Karanja oil obtained from the seeds of the Indian Karanja tree (Pongamia glabra). Pongamia Extract<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>) has a chemical structure similar to Avobenzone<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>) and a similar UV absorption spectrum. It also has been shown to increase SPF and act as an antioxidant.<\/p>\n

Sunjin Chemical<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Sunjin Chemical,\u00a0distributed by\u00a0Kobo <\/a>(EU<\/a>),\u00a0has developed an interesting new series of spherical-shaped exfoliating beads based on coating an inorganic substrate with natural-based waxes. The beads are available in a broad range of colors in particle sizes from 100-1000 microns and are very cost effective.<\/p>\n

Poly-Soleil (Shellac)\u00a0by\u00a0Mantrose-Haeuser\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n

This is a\u00a0natural based film forming polymer that provides a non-sticky, water-resistant, rub-resistant film on the skin. In sunscreen formulations, Poly-Soleil<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>) has been shown to provide 80 minute wash resistance using .5-3% Poly-Soleil. Formulations have also passed the 4-hour Australian water immersion test using 3% Poly-Soleil. This performance is comparable to the best synthetic waterproofing polymers on the market today.<\/p>\n

This product is\u00a0a nonionic associative thickener that is salt\/PH stable and forms clear gels. A 1% dispersion in water has a viscosity of 5-15K cps. It also has an excellent non tacky skin feel.<\/p>\n

Synoxyl HSS\u00a0(Trimethoxybenzylidene Pentanedione)\u00a0by\u00a0Sytheon<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Synoxyl HSS<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0a new photostabilizer that has been shown to significantly outperform Octocrylene<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>) and Oxynex ST<\/a>\u00a0(EU<\/a>) in stabilizing Avobenzone. A prototype containing 2% HSS had an in vivo SPF of 45, versus 30 without Avobenzone 2%, HMS 10%, OS 5%. It has also been shown to be an excellent stabilizer for retinol, natural vitamin E, vanillin and water-soluble organic dyes.<\/p>\n

While at Procter and Gamble, he worked in skin care product development, global fragrance development, and most recently oral care product development in the Oral Care Advanced Technology Innovation Group. Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter & Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics & Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
