In 2015, consumer bought more than\u00a0$11.2 billion of architectural coatings<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Architectural, building, and construction coatings &#8211; such as those for interior design, building exteriors, factory floors, and mortar modification &#8211; need to be formulated to address a variety of surfaces and applications. Often these formulations require special considerations to achieve desired results.<\/p>\n<h4>Common architectural surfaces:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>interior walls &amp; ceilings, including wood, plaster, masonry, and drywall<\/li>\n<li>trim &amp; crown molding<\/li>\n<li>exterior facades and trims<\/li>\n<li>deck\/woodcare<\/li>\n<li>floor finishes<\/li>\n<li>roofs<\/li>\n<li>doors<\/li>\n<li>fences<\/li>\n<li>masonry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A specific type of interior architectural coating is called &#8220;high performance architectural coating&#8221; (HIPAC). This highly durable coating cures to a hard, tough finish that resists abrasion, staining, chemicals, detergents, and mildew growth. Gloss levels can vary from very high to satin.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<h4>Common building and construction surfaces:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>aluminum\/chrome\/metal<\/li>\n<li>plastic<\/li>\n<li>concrete<\/li>\n<li>masonry<\/li>\n<li>mortar<\/li>\n<li>stucco<\/li>\n<li>siding<\/li>\n<li>architectural foam\/exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Surface considerations<\/h4>\n<p>The type of substrate helps determine the coating property requirements.
