Beneficial materials include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22fragrance%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">fragrances<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22fragrance%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=silicone&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">silicones<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=silicone&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), solid particles, and other hydrophobic skin\/hair conditioning ingredients. Most of these ingredients go down the drain since deposition efficiency is typically &lt;1%. Deposition technologies can significantly increase this.<\/p>\n<p>The main mechanisms that increase deposition are coacervation, precipitation and filtration. Coacervation occurs when anionic surfactant\/cationic polymer complexes that are soluble in the product precipitate during product dilution or rinsing. Actives like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=lipids&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">lipids<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=lipids&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) or fragrances become entrapped in the micelles that are part of the complex and co-precipitate. Filtration occurs when complexes or actives become physically trapped during product application and rinsing to substrates like hair.<\/p>\n<h4>Factors controlling coacervate precipitation and deposition:<\/h4>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">Polymer molecular weight, cross-linking, charge density, and concentration<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">\n<li>Low molecular weight (MW) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22polymer%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">polymers<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=%22polymer%22&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) tend to produce low amounts of coacervate regardless\u00a0of charge density.<\/li>\n<li>Polymer hydrophobicity.<\/li>\n<li>High MW polymers form more coacervate than when using low MW polymers of the same charge density.<\/li>\n<li>For polymers of equal MW but different charge densities, the higher charge density polymer produces more coacervate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">Polymeric back bone type and branching<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Cationic+guar&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Cationic guar<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Cationic+guar&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) (more flexible, branched) deposits better than cationic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294942058&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">hydroxyethyl cellulose<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294942058&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) (stiff, non-branched) of similar molecular weight and charge density.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Surfactant<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Anionic+surfactants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Anionic surfactants<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Anionic+surfactants&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) perform the best. More highly charged anionic surfactants like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294963967&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">sodium lauryl sulfate<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=sodium+lauryl+sulfate&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) react and bind better with cationic polymer.<\/li>\n<li>Higher surfactant concentration increases the amount of dilution necessary to get coacervate precipitation.<\/li>\n<li>Gemini surfactants like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294965425&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">sodium cocoyl glutamate<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294965425&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>)\u00a0are superior to single head group anionic surfactants.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294936559&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Amphoterics combined with anionics<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294936559&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) tend to increase the amount of dilution necessary to get coacervate precipitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Particles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solid-shape, particle size.\n<ul>\n<li>At a comparable particle size, flat particles deposit onto the scalp better than spherical ones and 12-18 nm spherical particles deposit\u00a0better than 3-5 micron spherical particles.<\/li>\n<li>Solid particle deposition from a shampoo base onto the scalp can be increased by polymers that enhance particle charge and modify foam rheology. In the absence of hair, particle deposition is very low due to less particle entrapment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Emollients&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Emollient<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Emollients&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>)\u00a0polarity, molecular weight, concentration, and particle size.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Small particle size silicone (.5 micron) deposits better using high MW polymer vs. low. For large particle size silicone (20 micron), lower MW polymer gives better deposition vs. high MW polymer.<\/li>\n<li>Large particle size silicones deposit well even without polymer but continued product use can lead to significant silicone buildup on hair.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrophobic emollients reduce the amount of dilution necessary for coacervate precipitation vs. polar emollients or no emollient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amount of dilution\/rinsing during use.<\/li>\n<li>Coacervate rheology.<\/li>\n<li>Electrolyte in formulation-type and concentration.\n<ul>\n<li>Electrolytes reduce the amount of coacervate and increase the dilution necessary to get precipitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">Lather amount and stability.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher lather stability increases active deposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.625;\">PH<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deposition of beneficial materials from\u00a0rinse off products is an important need when formulating shampoos, body washes, and hair conditioners. Before being appointed a Victor Miles Research Fellow, he also served as Associate Director of Exploratory Formulation for skin care product development. While at Procter &amp; Gamble, George was one of the top inventors, with 354 granted and filed global patents (201 U.S. patents). He helped develop many of the core platform technologies used in skin care today with numerous products commercialized under the Olay, Bain de Soleil, Clearasil, Noxzema and SK2 brands. Previously, George was a Senior Chemist and Manager in the area of skin care product development, as well as the Director of Exploratory Formulation for Charles of the Ritz Group. During this time, George received the President\u2019s Cup Award for outstanding business contribution and developed numerous marketed skin care products under the Bain de Soleil, Jean Nate, Yves Saint Laurent and Charles of the Ritz Brands. George is a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and is on the scientific advisory board for Cosmetics &amp; Toiletries Magazine. He is a frequent guest lecturer for numerous key global suppliers, as well as for local and national SCC meetings. George is an avid tennis player and follower of the sport.
