While there are several classes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Surfactants&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">surfactants<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Surfactants&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) that are suitable replacements for sulfated products, the challenge usually occurs when an attempt is made to increase the viscosity of a sulfate-free system. This becomes even more difficult when the requirement is to maintain clarity and achieve viscosity targets without the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=polymeric+thickener&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">polymeric thickeners<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=polymeric+thickeners&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If the use of natural polymers is allowed, then the palette of available ingredients would broaden to include gums such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294963328&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Xanthan gum<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294963328&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>). However, if the brief is more restrictive, this is a tall order indeed! While such requirements would negate traditional and popular approaches such as the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294964437&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">carbomers<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=carbomer&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=cellulose+derivatives&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">cellulose derivatives<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=cellulose+derivatives&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) or highly ethoxylated materials like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294963003&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">PEG-150 Distearate<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294963003&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), there are other avenues that are available to the formulator.<\/p>\n<p>Those skilled in the art might naturally first resort to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?incival=4294944738&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Sodium Chloride<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Sodium+Chloride&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) as a thickening agent \u2013 which is a cost effective approach that may deliver the desired results, depending on the salt sensitivity of the surfactant system involved. The limits for salt tolerance can easily be established by creating a salt curve with the salt contribution from surfactants included in the overall totals. Furthermore, product performance and aesthetics should also be evaluated to determine whether the rheological profile is being negatively affected to the extent that it results in stringiness.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the primary surfactants selected, the role of secondary surfactants in building viscosity should not be underestimated. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Betaines&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Betaines<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Betaines&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Hydroxysultaine&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Hydroxysultaines<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/search?k=Hydroxysultaine&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Alkanolamides&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Alkanolamides<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Alkanolamides&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Amine+Oxides&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">Amine Oxides<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Amine+Oxides&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) are but a few of the chemical classes that have multifunctional benefits, including viscosity enhancement. Given the current status of mono- and diethanolamines, mono- and diisopropanolamines have proven to be effective substitutes as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/na\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Foam+Boosters&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">foam boosters<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulprospector.com\/en\/eu\/PersonalCare\/Product\/search?k=Foam+Boosters&amp;sug=1&amp;st=31\" target=\"_blank\">EU<\/a>) and viscosifiers. These chemical classes are well represented among products listed on ULProspector.com. These types of ingredients, in conjunction with Sodium Chloride, may also benefit non-ionic systems, which can be stubbornly non-responsive to salt.<\/p>\n<p>Surfactant ratios also play a significant role is maximizing viscosity and should be thoroughly investigated. Understandably, given aggressive timelines, time is not always a luxury that the formulator can afford. Concurrent to her work at Prospector, Priscilla is a Product Development Chemist with Bria Research Labs. She is actively involved in formulating for a diverse array of clients. While she mostly formulates personal care and cosmetics products, she has also had the opportunity to work on projects for the household, industrial and institutional cleaners industry. Priscilla was born and raised in Trinidad, West Indies, but she considers Chicago her adopted hometown.
