Some say the beer will get warmer in a PET bottle, or that beer from a can tastes better. <a href=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2014\/07\/7923146_s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-806\" src=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/media\/2014\/07\/7923146_s-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"7923146_s\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/7923146_s-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ulprospector.ul.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/7923146_s.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plasticstoday.com\/articles\/sidel-targeting-beer-glass-market-with-new-PET-bottle-140630\" target=\"_blank\">Packaging provider Sidel<\/a> hopes to change\u00a0that. By developing a bottle that looks like glass, but has all of the benefits of PET, Sidel hopes to gain traction in a market where PET bottles only make up about 2% of the market (glass and cans take up the majority).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/plastics.ides.com\/generics\/37\/polyester\" target=\"_blank\">PET<\/a> bottles are widely used\u00a0for carbonated beverages, water bottles and many food products. One of the challenges when backing beer and other carbonated beverages is keeping oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. Another challenge\u00a0was the &#8220;base&#8221; or bottom of the bottle. Traditionally, PET bottles will use a &#8220;petaloid&#8221; base (like a flower) that is commonly seen in bottled water, and soda bottles. By using a rounded &#8220;champagne&#8221; base and a crown (versus twist off) cap, the bottle is able to mimic traditional premium beer bottles.<\/p>\n<p>Recycling also comes to mind. Coca-Cola has come up with a innovate way to turn PET bottles into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/cokestyle\/ekocycle-transforming-3d-printing-using-recycled-plastic-bottles\" target=\"_blank\">brand new creations<\/a>. In a partnership with Black Eyed Peas frontman,\u00a0will.i.am, the EKOCYCLE Cube uses recycled\u00a0bottles for filament. But who&#8217;s to say that you need to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.designboom.com\/design\/coca-cola-2nd-lives-caps-campaign-ogilvy-mather-06-03-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\"> throw the bottle away<\/a> in the first place?<\/p>\n<p>What other glass (or other material?) based objects could benefit from a plastic replacement?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a few &#8220;misperceptions&#8221; surrounding beer in a PET bottle.
