Environmental sustainability requires a decrease in VOC emissions. Cost reduction depends on reducing material usage as well as prep and application hours. Increased performance results in longer-lasting coatings that can withstand greater external stressors. In many markets, decreasing the VOC emissions of coatings has been the highlighted area of focus and a progressive effort for scientists in this industry. Replacing solventborne systems with waterborne dispersions is an effective strategy for reducing VOC emissions. Dispersions, however, often contain processing aids such as initiator fragments and surfactants that can decrease coating performance. This puts the goal of environmental sustainability in competition with the goals of cost reduction and increased performance.<\/p>\n<p>Waterborne direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings are expected to harmonize the goals of these drivers. Low VOC waterborne DTM coatings are effective in sustainably reducing the overall cost. Because a one-layer system is employed, there is less material used and less opportunity for applicator error. The key is sustainably providing the cost savings as a complement rather than a detriment to the required performance. BASF has a novel approach to addressing this balance. Our waterborne DTM portfolio includes high-performance one-component technologies as well as two-component technologies that behave and perform like traditional solvent-based systems. They even include pot-life indication that ensures consistently high performance.
