This webinar is an innovative learning session focused on formulating personal care products using multifunctionals and sodium benzoate.
Multifunctionals are an exciting ingredient category for personal care. One ingredient can provide a number of functions, shortening ingredient lists to meet consumer demand for cleaner, simplified labels. Using the latest technologies in multifunctionals, formulators can optimize costs, achieve robust product protection, and provide a luxurious consumer experience.
In addition to providing a range of performance enhancements, multifunctionals can also enable the use of eco-friendly, skin-friendly preservatives—such as sodium benzoate—in a broader range of formulations. In recent years, health and sustainability concerns have driven a major shift in the preservative landscape, causing many traditional preservatives to be scrutinized or restricted. These trends have led to sodium benzoate becoming a very popular choice. Using a green, gentle preservative such as sodium benzoate, formulators can create a total formula where the preservative and boosters work in conjunction to provide a high performing, well preserved product.
Strategies for using a multifunctional (Kalama® 3-Phenyl Propanol) with the preservative (sodium benzoate) will be discussed, along with multifunctional roles of chelators and surfactants. Data exploring the mechanisms for enhanced preservation of sodium benzoate will be presented, as well as challenge test results demonstrating the microbial inhibition that occurs with the addition of multifunctionals. Suggestions for how to enhance the performance and sensory characteristics of model formulations in leave-on and rinse-off applications will also be included.
Attendees will learn about:
- Enhancing performance features in personal care products using multifunctionals
- Extending the antimicrobial efficacy of sodium benzoate, a registered preservative with a green, skin-friendly profile
- Formulating products with mild ingredients and attributes, reducing the potential for irritation
