Luciana Uttembergue D’Elia, a Brazilian national, holds an Executive MBA from INSPER, a degree in Chemistry and Cosmetics Technology from Oswaldo Cruz University, São Paulo, Brazil, and a degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from Universidade Nove de Julho.
With 18 years of expertise in the cosmetics industry, Luciana has dedicated 13 years to dsm-firmenich. Beginning her journey as a Technical Manager in Brazil for 5 years, Luciana then transitioned to the US, where she excelled as the Senior Technical Manager overseeing the North American Regional Application Center for Personal Care for 4 years. In 2022 Luciana assumed the role of Senior Technical & Marketing Manager.
Before joining dsm-firmenich, Luciana contributed her skills and knowledge to the R&D Department at International Flavors and Fragrances for 5 years. Her dynamic background and commitment to excellence underscore her continuous success in the cosmetics and personal care industry.

Mathias Gempeler
Scientific Lead

Mathias Gempeler holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Basel, with a postgraduate in Marketing from KS St. Gallen.
He joined DSM through the acquisition of Pentapharm. Served as Head of Global Marketing, Skin Care until 2017, driving creation and execution of the company’s global growth strategy. Since 2017, has led Global Research for Bioactives and Vitamins, managing a team with responsibility for innovation and scientific development.
Additionally, Mathias acts as Scientific Lead for dsm‑firmenich Personal Care in the areas of skin microbiome and, since 2021, biotechnology.

Irena James
Head of Technology and Business Development Manager

Irena James is an accomplished leader in the beauty and personal care industry with over two decades of expertise in the field of cosmetic ingredients, product and brand development, beauty innovation, sales, and education.
Currently serving as Univar Solutions’ Head of Technology and Business Development Manager for bio actives and naturals, she has previously held roles as Vice President of Product Development in contract manufacturing and was a co-founder and partner of retail and professional skincare brands sold internationally. Irena’s extensive experience also includes being a featured guest on a multi-channel home shopping video retail platform for three years.
Additionally, she has contributed to the field as an instructor in the Cosmetic Sciences program at UCLA Extension for over a decade, educating generations of students, clients, and industry peers on cutting edge subjects in cosmetic chemistry, skin physiology, cellular biology, and cosmetic ingredients. Irena has shared her knowledge nationally and internationally through lectures and published articles in professional skin care magazines, journals, and beauty publications.

Amy Ethier
Regulatory Manager for the N.A. Beauty & Care business

Amy Ethier holds a Ph.D. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from Georgia Tech with a focus on sustainable chemistry and scalable processes.
Amy is currently the Regulatory Manager for the N.A. Beauty & Care business at dsm-firmenich. Amy joined the company having previously held roles in Regulatory, Technical Service and Technical Marketing with cosmetic, personal care and pharma ingredient suppliers.
Her interests are at the intersection of strategic regulatory, analytical methodologies and ingredient functionality in cosmetic and OTC formulations.
