Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on Earth and the main component of all plants. It makes sense to harness this resource and unlock its potential as a biomaterial. One development centered around this is Valida.
Valida is highly fibrillated cellulose manufactured by Sappi, a 100% natural, biodegradable and sustainable material produced by mechanically processing wood derived cellulose fibres down to their smallest components, resulting in innovative material properties. These properties include excellent stabilizing potential, flow modification and skin hydration. Valida’s unique rheology profile – high viscosity at rest and highly shear thinning – make it a suitable material for applications in personal care, from easily spreadable creams to sprayable formulations with outstanding stability. Valida’s hydrating properties counter greasy or tacky skin feel imparted by incumbent materials, and provide a fresh skin feel similar to carbomer, in a sustainable form. Since the commercialization of Valida, its value proposition has been proven in a wide range of applications, from face wash to skin cream to shampoos, sun protection and hand scrubs.
We will cover how Fibrillated Cellulose is produced and the difference to other conventional celluloses on the market before moving into the most common features Valida will impart to formulations through case studies, commercial examples and sample showcasing. We will explore innovative formulation concepts: stabilizing oil in water without using emulsifier, enhancing Sun Protection effectiveness, cost-effective replacement of microplastics and protection of active ingredients in finished formulations. We will finish with some considerations when using Valida. To unlock the functionalities of Valida in formulations, proper activation and addition is necessary.
