Epoxy coatings have a successful track record in high performance protective and marine coatings due to their combined benefits of providing an excellent corrosion protection and a high chemical resistance. In the protective and marine industries, these coatings are crucial for protecting steel structures from harsh environments and high stress. However, the coatings industry faces global restrictions on Volatile Organic compounds (VOC) limits. Some countries impose tax penalties and emission controls to address environmental concerns. As environmental and performance standards become more stringent, reducing VOC emissions from paints and coatings is essential. Despite this, epoxy paint formulations often include solvents for pigment dispersion and filler application. The design of ultra-low emission amine curing agents is critical to achieving high-solids epoxy paint formulations with minimal VOC content.
To address these challenges, Evonik has developed a novel amine curing agent technology that enables the design of ultra-low emission epoxy paints without compromising the handling or performance properties of traditional solvent-based systems. These intelligently designed curing agents exhibit low viscosity and rapidly build up properties at ambient and low temperatures. They require minimal or no plasticizer for full cure, ensuring that the coating can maintain its performance throughout its service life. Simultaneously, these agents offer high barrier properties, excellent flexibility, and strong adhesion to metal surfaces. In this webinar, we will showcase the handling and performance attributes of this innovative amine curing agent technology, which provides sustainable solutions for developing high-performance, low-emission epoxy paints.
