Sunscreen formulation presents significant challenges, even with access to all available ingredients. Due to consumer demand, the cosmetic industry is shifting towards natural alternatives for traditionally used synthetic ingredients. However, this shift must not compromise on product performance or skin feel. With the rise of clean lists and brands’ ingredient blacklists, alongside tightening sunscreen regulations in various regions across the globe and consumer expectation for sun care to feel like skin care, desirable sunscreens are becoming harder than ever to formulate.
There are 3 main pillars to a successful sunscreen formulation: 1) Stability; 2) Sensory and 3) SPF efficacy. Very often, formulation strategies to improve one of these areas will have a negative impact on another, bringing a challenge to the formulator to find the balance between them.
Sappi’s Valida microfibrillated cellulose is the multifunctional unsung hero of the sun care formulators toolbox, offering improved stability without increasing viscosity; superior skin feel, reducing tack, greasiness and providing a silicone-like powdery after feel; and SPF boosting – offering high performance and improvements in all areas of 3 pillars of sunscreen formulation simultaneously alongside naturality.
Key takeaways:
- The 3 key pillars of sunscreen formulation: SPF efficacy, stability and sensory ,
- Multifunctional benefits of microfibrillated cellulose
- Stability without viscosity
- Sensory enhancement
- SPF boosting
